Description
The Cape Ann Light Station, or The Thacher Island Twin Lights are the tallest lights in Massachusetts. The current granite towers were built in 1861. Just off the coast of Thacher Island a terrible shipwreck occurred during the great New England hurricane of 1635. It claimed 21 passengers and crew members lives, including the children and friends of the Thacher's. Thacher and his wife were the only survivors. The island was named after Anthony Thacher in 1636-1637. Massachusetts eventually purchased the island to establish a light station.
